Saint Moses the Black

Chalice employees gather each morning for prayer before beginning our busy workdays. As part of our prayer, we often share stories of the saints and reflect on how their lives can inspire and guide us in our own journeys of faith.

St. Moses the Black was one of the Desert Fathers who lives as a fourth-century hermit and monk in Egypt. He led a troubled early life punctuated with violence before experiencing a profound conversion to Christianity. He sought forgiveness and spiritual guidance from the monks of the desert, eventually embracing a life of prayer, humility, and repentance. Through his patience and compassion, he became a respected spiritual leader who welcomed others with mercy and understanding. St. Moses the Black is celebrated for his remarkable transformation and serves as a powerful example of God’s forgiveness and the possibility of change in every human heart.

Prayer:

St. Moses,
help us to turn away from our past mistakes
and open our hearts to God’s mercy and forgiveness.
May we grow in humility, patience, and love,
trusting that with God’s grace, we can always begin again.

Amen.

From Darkness to Light

St. Moses the Black was a true Desert Father whose extraordinary transformation offers hope to all who seek to change their lives and draw closer to God. The Church celebrates his feast day on August 28. Once known for murder, pillage and theft, St. Moses eventually turned away from his former life and embraced a life of peace, prayer and service.

His story reminds us that no one is beyond the reach of God’s mercy. His conversion is a powerful example of metanoia—repentance and a change of heart. Yet this transformation also required human effort. For decades, St. Moses lived a life of austerity, fasting and prayer as he worked to overcome his past and grow in holiness. His life reminds us of the importance of cleansing the soul with humility and love, including through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

St. Moses also teaches us the importance of spiritual vigilance and of remaining open to God’s call. His journey from violence to peace shows us that, with God, nothing is impossible. We are called to extend that same mercy and compassion to others, especially those who are vulnerable, marginalized or in need.

At Chalice Canada, we see this truth lived out as sponsors support children and families living in poverty, bringing hope and light to vulnerable lives. May we, like St. Moses the Black, embrace metanoia, trust in God’s mercy and become vessels of His love, bringing His light to a world in need.
