Chalice employees gather each morning for prayer before beginning our busy workdays. As part of our prayer, we often share stories of the saints and reflect on how their lives can inspire and guide us in our own journeys of faith.
Saint Cyprian was a bishop of Carthage who lived during a time of persecution and great division within the early Church. After his conversion to Christianity, he devoted his life to growing in faith and serving others, especially those who were poor, suffering, or in need. During times of persecution, he encouraged Christians to remain faithful to Christ, while also showing mercy and compassion toward those who had fallen away. His life reminds us that faith is not simply something we believe, but something we are called to live with courage, humility and love. Through his example, we are invited to remain faithful in difficult times, to extend mercy to others, and to place our trust in God even when the path ahead is uncertain.

The mercy and compassion of Christ
The life of St. Cyprian of Carthage reminds us that faith is not simply something we profess, but something we are called to live. In the midst of persecution and uncertainty, he remained steadfast in his faith and generous toward those in need. He understood that God’s love becomes visible through lives marked by compassion, unity, and selfless service. His words continue to challenge us: “Let us love not only in words, but through deeds that reveal the mercy and compassion of Christ.”

You are not only helping to meet practical needs; you are becoming a sign of God’s loving presence to those entrusted to our care.
St. Cyprian reminds us that we are never meant to keep God’s gifts to ourselves. The love we receive from Christ calls us outward—to see the dignity of every person, to respond to those in need, and to become instruments of His mercy in the world. In this way, even acts of generosity that may seem small can become powerful expressions of faith.
