Oscar is an active eight year old from the small village of Lyumbika, Zambia. Oscar is currently in Grade 1 and is very interested in pre-science studies. When Oscar is not in school, he really enjoys playing soccer with his friends, Patrick and Grace, after which they enjoy drinking energy drinks (munkoyo). He also likes helping his mother at home by fetching water. When Oscar finishes his studies, he is looking forward to entering the military where he wants to be a soldier so he can help his community.
Oscar lives with his parents, brother, and sister. Both his parents work as small-scale farmers growing maize and sunflowers for home consumption. Employment opportunities in the small village are limited and wages extremely low, making it difficult for Oscar’s parents to meet the family’s basic needs, including the children’s education fees. Being part of the sponsorship program would not only ease some of this struggling family’s financial worries, but it would ensure that Oscar can continue his studies and gain the foundational education needed to eventually attend post-secondary school and achieve his goal of becoming a soldier.
Sponsorship enables children to attend class every day and have the supplies they need to complete their education, grow up healthy, and achieve their dreams.
