Mary

Mary is a 73-year-old woman living in Memba, Kenya. She finds great fulfillment in gardening and is deeply grateful for the support she receives, which helps her navigate her daily life with dignity. While she is a dedicated gardener, she manages the physical challenges of arthritis and asthma, which limit her ability to engage in the heavy farm work that has served as her primary livelihood.

She lives independently in a home constructed of dirt with a metal sheet roof. Because her village is prone to seasonal flooding, her home has required significant resilience to maintain over time. Mary is a steadfast and appreciative woman whose commitment to her land and her community reflects her persevering spirit.
