Mary

Mary is a 60-year-old widower from a small village near Asembro, Kenya. Mary never had the opportunity to attend school when she was younger so she is unable to read or write and has never had formal employment as a result. Now, she has diabetes and a chronic leg wound, so she is unable to work to support her grandchildren. The wound needs regularly medical care but she is often unable to attend because of the cost.

Mary lives with family members in a dirt home. She depends on the help of relatives, although this is not always regular, so she sometimes goes without basic necessities, including nutrition. Being sponsored would be a significant help to Mary and help ease the financial strain on her relatives. It would also give her an opportunity to ensure she is able to regularly attend her medical appointments.

Sponsorship enables elders to eat well, access healthcare and medication, and connect socially with a community that fosters a sense of belonging.
