John
John is a resilient 78-year-old man living in Nanyuki, Kenya, where he resides in a wood home with a metal sheet roof. In his stronger years, he took great pride in farming to provide for himself, but he is no longer able to perform any physical labor due to his advanced age. He struggles with a constantly aching backbone and now walks with the support of a rod.
Since his wife passed away in 2015, John lives alone but remains closely supported by his two sons and his daughter-in-law, who visit him daily to provide essential care. His daughter-in-law carries the daily responsibility of cooking his meals and assisting him with hygiene, which poses a significant challenge as his family manages their own daily struggles. Because his loved ones bear the burden of his ongoing care while facing financial hardships of their own, the sponsorship program provides a critical lifeline, offering essential nutritional support, healthcare access, and the stability needed to ease their daily struggles.
Sponsorship enables elders to eat well, access healthcare and medication, and connect socially with a community that fosters a sense of belonging.
