Althea

Althea is a bright and ambitious 8-year-old girl living within our Tondo site in the Philippines. A math wiz in Grade 3, Althea dreams of becoming a doctor or teacher when she finishes school because these professions will allow her to help her community. When she’s not solving math problems, you’ll find Althea dancing, singing, and drawing with her best friends, Nathalie, Eunice, Timothea, and Xyrine.

Althea is a very talented little girl, but she says she sometimes feels shy about showing her talents to others. She’s also a huge fan of chicken, be it fired or a fillet! Althea has a few favourite colours — pink, yellow, and light blue — that perfectly reflect her cheerful nature.

Althea’s father is a tricycle driver and is the sole support for the family as her mother stays home to care for Althea and her younger siblings. Althea has one brother and two sisters. Despite her father’s hard work, his income is not sufficient to provide everything the family needs because all of his children are in school.

The family resides in their grandmother’s home, which is made of cement and has a thatched roof. They all live in a small room on the third floor of the building. The house is unsafe, however, as it is exposed to potential fires because of the incidents that regularly occur in the area, many because of the scattered illegal electricity connections many of the homes use. Sponsoring Althea would greatly help her continue her education and help the family pay for her school-related expenses.

Sponsorship enables children to attend class every day and have the supplies they need to complete their education, grow up healthy, and achieve their dreams.
