Fourteen-year-old Yosh is a kind, sociable student-athlete from Tondo, Philippines, who balances his studies with a love for basketball. Friendly and easygoing, he loves joking around with his sister and cousin. He lives in a home shared with his extended family, where his mother works as a cashier and his father earns what he can collecting used oil and driving a tricycle for hire.

One night in June, Yosh suddenly found he could only see red out of his right eye. His frightened parents rushed him to the emergency room, where doctors diagnosed a retinal detachment. He was quickly referred to a retina specialist, who performed emergency surgery to repair his retina and preserve his vision.

The local Chalice site stepped in immediately, advancing the cost of Yosh’s surgery so his treatment would not be delayed. His parents have stayed closely involved throughout, following every instruction from his medical team and bringing him to each follow-up appointment since his discharge.

Yosh is now recovering at home, carefully following his doctor’s positioning instructions and eye drop schedule as his retina heals. His upper field of vision has already improved, though his lower field remains blurry, and he continues attending regular follow-up visits with his ophthalmologist.

Critical Needs funding will reimburse the local site for the cost of Yosh’s surgery, hospitalization, and follow-up care, replenishing the emergency fund it drew on to get him treated without delay. This support will ease the burden on Yosh’s family and help other children get the same fast, life-saving care in the future.

Thank you for standing alongside Yosh and his family, helping this bright young athlete protect his vision and get back to the activities and people he loves.
