Eleven-year-old Jheyson lives with severe multiple disabilities in Sacaba, Bolivia, surrounded by the love of his parents and four siblings. He enjoys playing with toy cars and watching videos on a cell phone when he gets the chance, and he often brightens his family’s day with his smile, joining in on games and interacting warmly with those around him. Each week, he attends physical therapy at a local rehabilitation centre.

Jheyson has been diagnosed with bilateral coxa valga, a hip condition that limits his mobility. His doctor has recommended hip and tendon surgery to help him move with technical assistance in the future, an important step toward greater independence. The surgery itself will be covered by Bolivia’s public health insurance, but the specialized surgical supplies it requires are not.

Jheyson’s mother has carried him in her arms to appointment after appointment, without the technical aids that would make this easier. With support from the local Chalice team, Jheyson has completed the medical tests and evaluations his doctors need, and his surgery has already been approved. All that remains is securing the surgical supplies.

Jheyson is at home with his family, and his care team is ready to proceed with surgery as soon as the necessary supplies are secured. Afterward, a social worker and physical therapist will support his recovery and plan the next steps in his ongoing development.
Critical Needs funding will help purchase the surgical plates, screws, and supplies Jheyson’s hip and tendon surgery requires, supplies his family cannot afford on their own.

This support will make his surgery possible and open the door to greater mobility and independence.

Thank you for standing alongside Jheyson and his family, helping him take this important step toward greater mobility, independence, and a fuller life.
