Built for Belonging

This past Saturday, October 17, we marked The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. We take this day to reflect on efforts worldwide to protect human rights, dignity, and peace. The United Nations have given 2026 the theme of “Safe Homes for All,” because a reliable home is the foundation of secure, safe, and dignified families.

Brian, nine years old, grew up with his family of eight, and they did not have a reliable home at all. Their house in rural Kenya was made from mud with worn-out iron sheet roofs that leaked. A few years ago, the house collapsed entirely.

All that was left was their small kitchen, where all eight lived. Their little room had cracked walls, a leaky roof, and an earthen floor full of holes. They shared their small home with scorpions, centipedes, and other dangerous pests.

Today, with the support of Brian’s generous sponsor, they have a new, permanent, spacious, and comfortable house. Brian’s mother, Rael, is excited that it has two rooms and a sitting room. “Now they are proud of their safe havens,” says Sister Vincy, Mercy Care site director. “They have now restored dignity. They now live in confidence ” Parents sleep soundly and children have a space to focus on their homework. Their neighbours are inspired to do local development work.

‘‘I will now be hosting friends to my home without shame,” Brian says.
