For sponsored families in India, the building of 30 new homes is more than a safe place to live. These homes empower 137 family members with a sense of ownership, pride, and dignity for the first time.
Coming from extreme poverty and instability, these families were living in cramped, shared spaces, and makeshift huts with no indoor plumbing. This project is especially important for women and children, as safe indoor plumbing can provide protection from sexual harassment often endured at public toilets, while providing a necessary hygenic environment.
Owning a safe, affordable, and permanent home has always been a dream beyond reach for these families. But through the compassion and generosity of supporters, these homes will create a tangible foundation for children to grow and live in while offerring families a chance to be self-reliant.
Each home will be 187 square feet with a kitchen, living space, and adjoing 29.61-square-foot bathroom. To show their commitment, each family will contribute to the home’s construction and maintain it, including additional home-related expenses.
To ensure long-term viability, the project incorporates both environmentally and economically sustainable features. Each home is equipped with a rainwater harvesting system to conserve local water resources, along with an efficient leach-pit system for eco-friendly wastewater management. These green technologies not only minimize the community’s environmental footprint but also protect families from future utility and maintenance costs.
Led by the Chalice site director and Chalice program coordinator, the project maintains strict financial reporting and accountability. Community development organizers provide hands-on teaching and mentorship to families participating in the home’s construction.
Beyond providing immediate shelter, these homes represent a lasting investment in a brighter tomorrow for future generations. Families will receive practical training in home care and household management, giving them the necessary tools to protect their homes and build a legacy for their children.
