Sometimes the best Christmas gift is just giving love and joy without expecting anything in return. That’s what Anto Mercy, a Grade 6 student in LR. Nagar, India and her family did last Christmas.
The family has lived in LR. Nagar, in our Bangalore site, an extremely impoverished community in India, for 30 years. Anto Mercy’s father works as an electrician, while her mother, Mary, supports the family as their primary breadwinner by working at a local school. Despite their tireless efforts, making ends meet on a limited income remains a constant struggle.
However, through Mary’s involvement in the Jyothi Chalice Circle group, Anto Mercy joined the sponsorship program in 2024 — giving her the support and confidence she needs to pursue her education and achieve her dream of becoming a nurse.
Grateful for help with her daughter’s education, Mary decided to spread her joy this past Christmas. The family came together and decorated their home with colourful lights and a beautiful Christmas star. Mary then gathered her two daughters and together they shared the true meaning of Christmas with the neighbourhood children — spreading love and joy without expecting anything in return.
Special Christmas Prayers
The family then spent the evening at Christmas Mass where they prayed, sending special intentions for their sponsors and the entire Chalice family.
Although their celebration was simple, it had great meaning for the family. Through a generous Chalice donor, the family received a little extra Christmas gift for this special occasion, which was very unexpected and brought even more joy, hope, and a sense of belonging to this beautiful family.
