Yohan

This seven-year-old boy is the second among three siblings who live with their parents in Tondo, the Philippines. Johan is only in Grade 2 but he already knows he wants to be a scientist so he can invent things to help his parent when he grows up. He loves math and gets excited to solve division problems. He is a very caring and friendly child with many friends but he really enjoys playing with his older brother, Hanan, who he says is his best friend. When Yohan isn’t solving math problems or doing an experiment, he and his brother like to ride bikes and watch cartoons together.

The family live in a plywood home with a sheet-metal roof. Yohan’s father is a tricycle driver and little Yohan has already decided he wants to invent an automatic door for his father’s bike!  His mother stays home with the children and used to peel garlic to make extra money but she is expecting another child soon. Balancing basic daily necessities like food and clothing alongside future early educational expenses presents a continuous financial hurdle for Yohan’s family.
