Wahengbam

This ambitious seven-year-old boy from Mantripikhri, India is in Grade 1. Wahengbam loves science class, reading, and is very good at cursive writing. When he finishes school his dream is to become a police officer in his community. He has lots of friends but his best friend is Chanrelembi, who he likes playing basketball with when the pair are not in school.

Wahengbam lives with his parents and sister in a small dirt home with a sheet-metal roof. His father works long hours as a driver and his mother stays at home to care for the two siblings. Life is hard for Wahengbam and his family as despite his father’s tireless work to support the family, they are still very poor, often lacking basic essential needs. Sponsoring Wahengbam would help keep him in school where he can learn and grow and eventually become a police officer, something that would help break the cycle of poverty for his family.
