The start of a new school year is often full of promise — a fresh chapter filled with new friends, shared laughter, and growing independence. But for children who experience the world differently, it can also feel overwhelming.
That was the reality for Avhustyn, a bright 12-year-old boy from Lviv, Ukraine. Born with a mild neurological impairment, Avhustyn has navigated behavioural, cognitive, emotional, and physical challenges his entire life. While other children can talk with each other effortlessly for hours on end, speaking for only a few moments was a struggle for Avhustyn. Expressing himself meant long pauses, short phrases, and avoiding eye contact, making it difficult to connect with his peers.
Yet beneath his silence was a vibrant inner world filled with a beautiful harmony of sound and rhythm. Avhustyn had an extraordinary innate ear for music — even as a toddler, he could repeat intricate melodies after hearing them just once. So, when he held a violin for the first time, everything changed. The instrument became his voice, allowing him to speak directly to the world without the words he often stumbled to express.
Managing Avhustyn’s care, medical support, and specialized therapies placed a heavy financial strain on his family. But nine years ago, when they joined the Chalice sponsorship program, they found a vital lifeline that helped them during their hardest moments.
Sponsorship ensured Avhustyn could continue his education and nurture his musical gift. Guided by his dedicated teachers, he learned to listen — to hear the music, his mentors, and himself. Each year, Avhustyn continued to blossom. He smiled more often and began opening his heart and sharing his emotions with those around him.
Today, Avhustyn is in music school where he is a successful student and an award-winning laureate in international violin competitions. Every note he plays carries a piece of his soul, moving audiences with its depth and raw sincerity — not a single word needed.
“Without this help, we would not have been able to continue his lessons… it was music that became the key to my son’s development and happiness,” Avhustyn’s mother says, adding that she is endlessly grateful to everyone who took this amazing journey with her.
