At just 11 years old, Melody has already endured more pain than most children experience in a lifetime. Since birth, she has lived with multiple serious medical conditions, including severe intellectual disability, level 3 autism, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, and a rare genetic disorder. Unable to attend school, she spends her days at home under the constant care of her mother, finding joy in simple moments like watching children’s movies, listening to music, and sharing precious smiles with her family.
In recent years, Melody has also suffered from severe digestive problems that have caused chronic pain, malnutrition, and ongoing discomfort. Now, her family faces another frightening challenge. Doctors have diagnosed her with vesicoureteral reflux, a condition that causes urine to flow backward toward the kidneys instead of leaving the body normally. This has resulted in repeated urinary tract infections and places her kidneys at serious risk of permanent damage if left untreated.
A pediatric urologist has urgently recommended surgery to correct the condition before irreversible harm occurs. While Bolivia’s public health system will cover the operation itself, Melody’s family cannot afford the specialized medical supplies required for the procedure.
Melody’s mother carries this burden almost entirely on her own. Her husband has long since left the family, offering only occasional support. To provide for her daughters, she sews and sells clothing whenever she can, but caring for Melody’s complex medical needs allows her to work only a few days each week. Much of the family’s limited income is already consumed by medications and essential daily care.
