Eleven-year-old Jordy is a cheerful and respectful boy who loves playing soccer with his friends and dreams of one day becoming a doctor. He attends school through a scholarship and also participates in an after-school tutoring program that helps him continue learning despite the health challenges he has faced. Although naturally optimistic, Jordy’s illness has made it increasingly difficult for him to keep up with school and enjoy the childhood every young boy deserves.
What first appeared to be a simple case of the flu gradually turned into a frightening medical journey. Over several months, Jordy suffered persistent symptoms and received different diagnoses before doctors finally discovered he was living with antiphospholipid lupus erythematosus, a rare autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the body and can cause dangerous blood clots, severe bleeding, and damage to vital organs. Recently, his condition worsened when he developed unusual spots on his body followed by prolonged nosebleeds that required emergency hospitalization. Despite receiving powerful medications, his body has not responded as doctors had hoped. Specialists have now recommended an advanced biological medication administered intravenously to help control the disease, reduce further complications, and give Jordy the best chance of recovery.
Jordy’s family has already sacrificed so much to care for him. His parents left Bolivia in search of work after accumulating debts from his ongoing medical treatment, leaving Jordy and his siblings in the care of their grandmother. Although his mother works tirelessly abroad and sends whatever support she can, the cost of his specialized treatment is far beyond what the family can afford. Throughout every hospitalization and medical appointment, they have remained by Jordy’s side, holding onto hope that he will one day regain his health.
Support through the Critical Needs Fund would provide the specialized medication Jordy urgently needs to help control his illness, relieve his suffering, and give him the opportunity to return home, continue his education, and simply enjoy being a child again.
