How Donor Support Brings Sports to Visually Impaired Children

As the world comes together to celebrate the excitement of the FIFA World Cup, we’re reminded that sports are about much more than what happens on the field, pitch, or court. They shape confidence, build friendships, and create a sense of belonging—especially for children.

At Saint Mary’s School for the Visually Impaired in Kawambwa, Zambia, staff see this impact every day. Sports are not treated as secondary pastimes, but as a vital part of each child’s development.

“Sports play a vital role in physical fitness, emotional well-being, and social interaction,” says Sister Agnes, Kawambwa site director.

Saint Mary’s is a boarding school for children with visual impairments and/or albinism. Until recently, limited access to sports equipment and jerseys made it difficult for students to fully participate. While young athletes around the world step onto global stages in full kit this World Cup season, these students were often left without the basic resources to play comfortably.

That has now changed, thanks to the generosity of Chalice supporters.

“With the new jerseys, they can now play with comfort and confidence,” she says, “fostering a spirit of inclusion, teamwork, and school pride. These jerseys… allow them to participate in physical education, friendly matches, and competitions with pride and unity.”

Moments like these reflect the same joy and unity we see on the world stage—but in a setting where the impact is deeply personal. A simple jersey becomes more than clothing; it becomes a symbol of dignity, inclusion, and opportunity.

When Chalice sponsors and donors remember ‘little things’ like jerseys, they “collectively contribute to a holistic, nurturing school experience,” Sister Agnes says, “allowing visually impaired students to thrive, learn, and grow in a setting designed to support their unique needs.”

“The impact of this funding is profound, demonstrating a commitment to equity, inclusion, and sustainability in education.”
