Jayreal is a bright 13-year-old boy from Tondo, the Philippines, where he lives with his parents and two brothers and sister. Now, in Grade 7, this budding math whiz loves everything math, especially learning about square roots and other math concepts. He also loves art class, and looks forward to drawing assignments. When Jayreal is not solving math problems, he is an avid basketball and boxing fan. He has two best friends who also enjoy learning, so the three like spending time together during school programs and activities. As the oldest of his siblings, Jayreal hopes to become a soldier one day and looks forward to military training, so he can protect people and support his family.

Jayreal’s father works as a day labourer, loading flour on trucks, a job that is not consistent and does not pay enough to support his family alone. His mother works in the school feeding program, although her job is on a contract basis and a big help to the family, it is not reliable income. Both Jayreal’s parents also peel sacks of garlic for extra income so they do not have to borrow from the local store for food and to help with school supplies. Balancing daily survival needs with educational materials for multiple growing children presents a continuous financial hurdle for the household. The family lives in a cement home with a sheet-metal roof.

Sponsorship enables children to attend class every day and have the supplies they need to complete their education, grow up healthy, and achieve their dreams.
