The Eh-Team: How Canadian Kindness is Changing the World This Canada Day

Happy 159th Canada Day! Today is all about backyard BBQs, fireworks, dressing head-to-toe in red and white (including decking out the family dog), and indulging in a classic beaver tail. But beneath the coast-to-coast patriotism lies the real superpower that defines the Canadian spirit: our massive hearts.

Being Canadian is about far more than just surviving winter or ordering a double-double. It’s about a deep-seated drive to leave the world a little better than we found it. This July 1st, let’s shine a spotlight on that incredible generosity — specifically through the lens of Chalice’s tireless sponsors and volunteers who support vulnerable children and elders, and much more.

Striking Change: Andrea’s Story

Andrea, a Toronto-area kindergarten teacher, is a glowing example of Canadian compassion without borders. Having immigrated to Canada in 2000, she and her husband fully understand the impact one person can make. They’ve been sponsoring vulnerable children through Chalice since 2007, but Andrea wanted to do even more.

Her solution? Combine a favourite Canadian pastime with a great cause.

In 2019, Andrea and her family launched “Bowl for Chalice,” a twice-yearly event benefiting the Chalice Nutrition Fund. Today, nearly 100 players and growing — from rookies to pros — come out to roll a few frames, indulge in some bake sale tasty treats, bid on silent auctions, join the 50/50 draw, and pack in as much fun as humanly possible.

Beyond the bowling alley, Andrea champions Chalice everywhere she goes — running school spring bazaars for a primary school in Kenya, leading Christmas fundraisers, and raising awareness at the Lift Jesus Higher Rally.

Why Canadians Give Back

Why are Canadians so willing to step up? It’s simple: we care. Beyond saying “sorry” a dozen times a day, we put our money and time where our mouths are.

“We were blessed to be born into a good life, so I feel it’s our responsibility to share what we have with those in need,” Andrea says. “As an individual, you can’t change the world, but you can make a difference in the life of a few children. Feeling the joy of making a difference is so rewarding!”

The impact of that mindset is staggering. So far, Andrea’s Bowl for Chalice events have found sponsors for seven children and raised a massive $20,270 to keep kids healthy, fueled, and in school.

A Coast-to-Coast Lifeline

From bustling cities to tight-knit communities across the Maritimes and the Prairies, everyday Canadians are stepping up as champions against abject poverty. Through Chalice initiatives like Ladles and Love and Lunch Buddies, among others, donors are funding clean water, vital vaccines, school supplies, and life-changing nutrition.

Giving back doesn’t just change the trajectory of young lives abroad; it helps us grow, anchoring us in gratitude and strengthening our faith.

So, as you raise a glass or watch the fireworks this Canada Day, celebrate the incredible warmth of Canadians coast to coast. Keep being awesome, Canada — the world is a whole lot brighter with you in it!
