In the Juakali community at Chalice’s Baraka site in Kenya, a tailoring training centre for local women has opened new doors of opportunity and independence. With support through Chalice’s Gift Catalogue, 25 women began training in knitting and tailoring, beginning a new chapter of hope with the promise of brighter futures for themselves and their families.
Throughout the program, the women developed a wide range of skills, including knitting sweaters, creating patterns, and making caps and woollen bags – turning simple materials into vibrant handcrafted pieces. As Fr. Varghese, Baraka Site Director, shares, the learners are “producing beautiful handcrafted items that reflect their dedication and creativity.”

The impact, however, reaches far beyond skills alone. For many of these mothers, the centre has become a place of transformation – building confidences and creating pathways toward financial independence. “The success of the tailoring centre is a testament to what can be achieved when we work together to uplift communities and provide opportunities for growth and self-sufficiency,” says Fr. Varghese.
As cohorts of women complete their training, they mark an important milestone. “Their journey from [beginners] to skilled artisans has been remarkable,” says Fr. Varghese. “We have witnessed a significant improvement in their craftsmanship and entrepreneurial mindset. Many of the women have already started producing items for sale, and we anticipate that their efforts will have a lasting positive impact on the community.”
“We extend our deepest gratitude to Chalice for your unwavering support and belief in the potential of the women in Juakali Area. Your support has gone beyond monetary value—it has been a source of hope, encouragement, and empowerment. Your support has been instrumental in empowering the women of this community, providing them with invaluable skills that will benefit them for a lifetime.”
This Mother’s Day, we celebrate mothers like those in Juakali – women of strength, creativity and perseverance who are shaping brighter futures for their families.
