Our students in Kenya outgrew the classroom, not just in knowledge, but physically, as the space is far too small for the increasing number of children attending school. They haven’t had any refurbishment since 2016, when it was initially built.
The Franciscan Sisters run Chalice’s Asembo site in Kenya for pre-primary to grade two students, known locally as Nyawita. “Nyawita is a comprehensive school that caters for orphans and vulnerable children who thirst to acquire decent basic primary education,” says Sister Pauline, Asembo site director.
About 112 children are “squeezed” in, roughly equally divided among four early grade levels. Now that the number of children has increased, they are “quite congested in the small classrooms,” says Sr. Pauline. In the rainy seasons, the rooms were damp and cold. In the dry seasons, they were stifling and dusty.
Thanks to everyone who gave the gift of ‘classroom construction or repair’ through Chalice’s gift catalogue, the Sisters had the opportunity to plan for building and improving two pre-kindergarten classrooms at Nyawita school. They cleared new land and put up fresh new walls with large windows and east-to-clean tile floors.
“We really appreciate the efforts made as this will enable us to successfully attain our objective one of the construction projects that will late result to a good learning environment for the children,” says Sr. Pauline.
“We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the donors, partners, and community members who have made this program possible. Your generosity and support are changing lives and building a brighter future for our community.”
Help provide a better learning environment for our young students who are eager to learn and expand their knowledge. Give the gift of ‘classroom construction or repair’ in our spring gift catalogue.
