Michael's surgery after leg fracture, Mombasa, Kenya

Michael lives with his grandmother, Roseline, in an informal human settlement in Mombasa. His mother died when he was two years old. Roseline runs a small grocery shop that supports her to take care of the basic needs of the family.

Michael’s Chalice sponsor supports her to cover 12-year-old Michael’s school needs including, school uniform, school supplies, nutrition, and clothing. The small grocery shop helps her to pay for the monthly house rent and emergencies.

In February 2025, Michael and his classmates were playing on the school playground when he fell. He was rushed to the hospital.

The hospital did not offer the specialized treatment required and only put the leg in a cast and provided pain relief. Roseline quickly took him to a second hospital, where doctors saw he had multiple fractures in his leg, and brought in a consultant orthopedic surgeon. The surgeon recommended emergency open reduction and internal fixation surgery. As per his recommendation, Michael was admitted for the operation.

The cost of hospitalization and surgery, transportation, four post-surgery reviews, and nutrition comes to a total budget of $5,883.22 CAD. Roseline came to the Mombasa staff for support to help her pay the surgery bills for her grandchild so that he can properly and permanently heal, regaining his full mobility and strength.
