Prisca's house rebuild after floods, Nandom, Ghana

Prisca lives with her parents, Paul and Francisca, and her little sister, Lucy, in rural northern Ghana, within our Nandom site. Prisca is a brilliant student and is waiting to join university next year.

Her father, Paul, was born with disability and has speech impairments. A career farmer, today Paul doesn’t have the same physical strength to labour on his farm as he used to. Francisca likewise has had some health troubles and too cannot keep up with the work-intensive farm.

Their family income, which was always low, has decreased with these recent health challenges. According to Prisca, her Chalice sponsor has been the major source of her family’s means to afford her and her sister’s education, healthcare, and nutrition.

Their home was a one-room shelter made of mud, wood, and gravel. It was rotten and derelict, but Paul and Francisca had no means to afford repairs.

During the 2024 rainy season, Prisca’s family was hit hard by excessive flooding, further damaging their house. Now when it rains, the family has to go stay with neighbours, abandoning their belongings, which get soaked. The Nandom site staff describe the situation as ‘a nightmare’. The staff are anxious that another wave of flooding might completely sweep their house away.

While Paul and his family have tried to salvage the situation with local items, they lack the financial ability to buy zinc, timber, and other more durable materials. After visiting and assessing the situation, the site staff worked out an agreement with Paul: he agreed to mold the bricks, and the site would request a budget of $7,573.91 CAD to buy the high-cost materials to construct a stable two-bedroom home.

Thus agreed, the Nandom staff have requested this budget, which includes cement, sand, stones, zinc, wood, wire, ceiling tiles, four doors, five windows, and paint.
