A person’s life can change with the right treatment, but for many, that chance is out of reach. Venkata, a 55-year-old man living near our Nellore sponsor site in India, has overcome tremendous challenges. As the devoted grandfather of Anju, a sponsored child who tragically lost her parents at a young age, Venkata has been a constant source of love and support for his grandchildren.
“Alongside her siblings, an elder brother with a physical disability and a younger sister, Anju’s life has been profoundly affected by the tragedy,” says Sr. Rubiya, Nellore site director.
“Yet, Venkata has been a steadfast pillar of support for them, embodying resilience in the face of adversity,” Sr. Rubyia says.
In early February 2024, Venkata began experiencing severe abdominal pain, fever, and cold symptoms. Initially relying on home remedies, he soon realized that his condition was worsening.
His wife, Subhamma, took him to the clinic, where he was diagnosed with a serious liver infection that required immediate hospitalization.
Over the next ten days, he underwent treatment that significantly improved his condition. But at home, Subhamma and the children found themselves in a vulnerable position. Venkata is the only breadwinner, working as a porter in the local vegetable market.
“With his health compromised and unable to work, Venkata’s family faced financial hardship,” Sr. Rubiya says. “Their challenges were compounded by the needs of Anju and her siblings, as their grandmother remained at home caring for the special needs of their elder brother.”
“Recognizing the family’s dire situation, Chalice stepped in to provide critical support,” she says.
Thanks to the girls’ sponsors and support through our critical needs program, “the family received the assistance they needed to navigate this difficult period. Venkata’s health began to improve.
Today, Venkata is back home, where Subhamma and their neighbours are happy to care for him.
“While the path to full recovery is ongoing, the love and commitment he has for his grandchildren serve as a powerful motivator. He is determined to regain his strength and return to work, ensuring that Anju and her siblings can have a brighter future.”
