Chalice’s Saida sponsor site is the town of Gilgil in Kenya. Children look forward to learning, but the worry of what students would bring for lunch was a concern for many. The Saidia site staff, and the teachers, know that the children are arriving at school hungry. Students’ education is the beginning of their future, and starting the day on an empty stomach does not prepare them for productive learning.
Savithriamma was experiencing health issues of her own. She had difficulty urinating and was diagnosed with pelvic organ prolapse, so she would need to undergo surgery.
However, as retired elders caring for a son with medical challenges, Savithriamma and Sivaraman did not have the means to cover the cost of her surgery.
Savithriamma turned to the Chalice family circle to seek support. They let her know she could request critical needs support from Chalice.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors and the critical needs fund, they were able to help her cover the medical expenses. “Savithriamma felt that she was cared for,” says Sr. Deepa, Kerala site director, “the family is ever grateful to Chalice for this valuable support.”
The surgery was successful, and she was discharged after four days. She is now on medication and has a follow-up appointment scheduled for next month.
“The [Chalice family circle] understood that helping them will bring great relief to this family,” says Sr. Deepa. And it did. The couple breathed a sigh of relief when they received the support to cover the hospital expenses.
Over the past three years critical needs have almost doubled. Chalice has put more focus towards breaking the financial barriers between urgent health care and other unexpected expenses.
