What’s the Chalice connection?
Our Mombasa sponsor site is in the communities of Changamwe, Kikambala, and Kwale on the outskirts of the coastal city of Mombasa. Chalice started the site in 2001 and currently partnered with the Sisters of St. Joseph to run our sponsorship program.
There are Chalice sponsored children who attend Vuga, and the school is a member of Chalice’s African School Farming and Food Security Project. Chalice has also been supporting their school lunch program, which has improved attendance and student performance. We are also working with the Mombasa site on a project that will drill a 100m-130m deep borehole well in the Kwale community.
Vuga’s biggest challenge
Families in Kwale county face many grave challenges. The area is very rural and lacks proper roads, piped water, and other basics. Students’ parents are mainly subsistence farmers who are only able to grow enough food for themselves. Families must walk long distances to rivers and streams to fetch water to drink, wash, water their crops and livestock. A multi-year draught has made water scarcer and caused the crops to fail. Families in this area are highly vulnerable to food insecurity and famine. Children walk long distances (8-10km) to reach school and arrive without having eaten.
