The Sisters of St Joseph run Grandsons of Abraham Rescue Centre and Education Centre in Kilifi County, Kenya. Since 1995, they offered shelter and rehabilitation for children who were unhoused. Often these youth have come unstable situations and are highly vulnerable.
The Sisters wanted to open a primary school as an extension of the rescue centre, so the children could complete their education once they were fully rehabilitated. With the support of Chalice and other stakeholders, they opened Grandsons of Abraham Education Centre.
Today, 90 children live in the dormitories at the centre, receiving all their care, meals, and education from the Sisters. There are eight staff members. The Centres are entirely donor-supported.
What’s the Chalice connection?
Our Mombasa sponsor site is in the communities of Changamwe, Kikambala, and Kwale on the outskirts of the coastal city of Mombasa. Chalice started the site in 2001 and currently partnered with the Sisters of St. Joseph to run our sponsorship program.
There are Chalice sponsored children who attend Grandsons of Abraham and graduates who have continued to secondary school. The school is a member of Chalice’s African School Farming and Food Security Project. We are also working with the Mombasa site on a project that will drill a 100m-130m deep borehole well in the Kilifi community.
What’s Grandsons of Abraham’s biggest challenge?
The Centre depends on well-wishers and donors to be able to meet all the children’s needs, including clothing, school supplies, and food. A multi-year drought and dramatic economic inflation has made food very expensive, and the Sisters spend most of their funds on feeding the children. They cannot afford anything beyond the very basics.
The students at GAEC have overcome so many barriers to be there. The Sisters want them to have every opportunity to succeed on their grade eight exams, proceed to secondary school, and have a chance at bright future.By becoming Grandsons of Abraham’s sister school, you can make a huge difference.
