Support for 34 families affected by fire at Aroma Temporary Housing, Tondo, Philippines

At around 10:30pm one night in March 2024, a fire broke out in the densely packed Aroma Temporary Housing neighbourhood in Manila. It was a three-alarm fire before midnight, and crews battled the flames until sunrise, according to local news reports.

The fire forced 652 families out of their homes, including 15 involved in the sponsorship program. Then a second fire broke out, affecting nearly two thousand families. Of those, 19 have at least one sponsored child. The average family size is six people.

“The scale of this disaster is staggering,” says Quirlyno, Tondo program coordinator. “Many of these individuals were already vulnerable, and the loss they have experienced is unimaginable.” The families are forced from their homes, and many have lost their source of livelihood.

The 34 affected families are composed of 210 people, 109 of whom are children. Among them are 42 sponsored children. The parents earn their livelihoods from work such as scavenging, labouring, street vending, sewing, and driving.

Among the affected families, the average household income is about $230 CAD. The Tondo site compiled a list of the materials the families will need to reconstruct their houses; for each family, the construction materials are more than five times their wages.

The site has therefore requested $46,104.54 CAD to cover these materials for the 34 affected families. The site will disburse funds for families to buy the materials and undertake their reconstruction over the next four months.

The Tondo team will work with the families to plan their shopping lists, in coordination with the neighbourhood authorities designing the housing rebuilding project. The site will guide the family in their procurement process, and direct construction workers in an effort to improve efficiency and reduce waste.

Your support will bring hope and security to 210 people who find themselves without shelter or daily necessities.
