Viktoriya Is on the Path to Healing

Like most teenage girls, Viktoriya enjoys reading, painting and chatting with friends online. Despite facing challenges due to a disability, she approaches life with bravery and tenacity, and lives near our Ternopil site in Ukraine.

When she was still little, her parents noticed she struggled with her mobility. A doctor confirmed she was born with a congenital abnormality in her skeletal system. She went through the first of eight surgeries at just seven months old. Walking short distances requires crutches, and she attends a school for children with special needs. She’s suffered, but keeps her head high.

Photo Friday: Our top 5 ‘World Book Lovers’ Day’ photos

Welcome to Photo Friday! Each Friday, we share photo collections of our favourite shots from our sponsor sites around the world.

Having fun isn’t hard, when you’ve got a library card!

That’s right: tomorrow is World Book Lovers’ Day, and we’re here to celebrate with a special Photo Friday in its honour.

Teaching a child to love books is one of the best gifts you can give – and indeed, these photos from our sites in Ukraine demonstrate just that.

#5: Reading with Mom

Reading a story with Mom or Dad before bed is a beloved childhood memory for many, and every child around the world should have the experience. Just follow the example of this mom at our Pochaiv site. She even chooses books with bright colours, to keep it fun for her kids.

Dreams Come True in Pochaiv

This might be a sports story, but it’s not your cliché sports story.

Some kids grow up hearing the words ‘touchdown’ alongside phrases like ‘She shoots, she scores!’ before they can even walk. But in the Ukraine, there are often barriers to playing sports that keep some kids on the bench.

Take Kyrylo. He’s dreamed of being an athlete since he was a kid, and loves watching sports on TV. He even heads to the local stadium for a game once in a while. But this young boy, who grew up near our Pochaiv site, was limited to spectating.

The Radiance of Ukranian cuisine: Pierogi

Pierogi (also called varenyky) stuffed with potatoes and bacon is one of the most iconic Ukrainian recipes, and families have been enjoying this savoury dish for centuries. The dumplings are often mentioned in Ukrainian folklore songs and literature.

Each Ukrainian host has his or her own recipe for pierogis, but the cooking method remains the same: wrapping unleavened dough around the filling. The fillings for pierogis can include almost anything. Besides potatoes, some of the more popular fillings include minced meat, minced beans, cottage cheese, peas, or cabbage. Dessert fillings can include cherries, raspberries, apples, blueberries, or billberries.

Pierogis have always been, and continue to be, an integral part of festive meals at weddings, christenings, feast days, and church holidays in rural Ukraine.

The most important part of the recipe is preparing the dough. Don’t worry if it doesn’t turn out picture-perfect on the first try though – it can take years of practice!

Did you know? Chalice ensures children have balanced and nutrient-rich diets by implementing school feeding programs through the support of the Chalice Children Nutrition Program.

Photo Friday: Our top 5 ‘Group’ photos

Welcome to Photo Friday! Each Friday, we share photo collections of our favourite shots from our sponsor sites around the world.

You’re at an event with some old friends. Everyone is laughing over treats and hot drinks when, suddenly, someone pulls out their phone and says, “Hey…why don’t we take a group photo?”

Whether gathering at a coffee shop, a school reunion or a wedding, group photos are a well-known (and sometimes feared) part of coming together. They’re also snapshots of important moments in our lives, and show love in action. This week, our top 5 ‘Group’ photos remind us of the joy of gathering with friends and family.

#5: A Range of Emotions

At our Haiti North site, these children are showing the varying degrees of emotion people feel when asked to pose for a group photo. Some are camera-ready, some are grimacing, and some are a bit confused. Remind you of anyone?

Sirilia Gives Her Family a Home

Tucking children into bed, folding tasty ingredients into a sauce on the stove, and having a quiet spot to relax with a cup of tea – these are just a few things moms love about having their own home.

Sadly, for many living at and near our Haiti North site, stable shelter isn’t always a reality.

Where Sirilia lives, agriculture production is a main source of income for families, and she even writes that their lives “depend” on it. But in recent times, the area has seen long periods of drought. Many crops were lost, and supporting her family became difficult.

Yet still, hope bloomed when two of her children entered the sponsorship program, a steppingstone to a better life for the family.

Photo Friday: Our top 5 ‘Home-Sweet-Home’ photos!

Welcome to Photo Friday! Each Friday, we share photo collections of our favourite shots from our sponsor sites around the world.

There’s no place like home. Having a safe place to sleep and a roof over one’s head is a basic right everyone should have access to. Sadly, many people live on the streets, or in unsafe structures.

Our top 5 ‘Home-Sweet-Home‘ photos remind us how valuable a place to call home really is – whether it’s a building or a person.

#5: A new friend

Sometimes home isn’t a building over one’s head, but a person who makes you feel at home. Didley is a community health worker in Terrier Rouge, Haiti. He and his colleagues make regular rounds of their neighborhood, checking in on the health of residents. In this photo, he’s visiting Elicienne.

A Wave of Change in St. Dominque

Since 1999, Chalice supporters have made a difference in Haiti. They’ve provided disaster relief in the wake of the 2010 earthquake and 2016 hurricane, and helped sponsored children complete their education. And at our St. Dominique site, grants, gift catalogue purchases and sponsorships fueled by generous donors are generating waves of change.

At one of the orphanages Chalice works with in Haiti, finding the money to pay wages can be difficult. Thanks to a grant funded by supporters, the orphanage covered five months of wages for its employees. And the work with orphanages doesn’t stop there.

Another orphanage desperately needed help. A government agency visited the girl’s dormitory, and asked the building that be torn down. It was cracked from the earthquake, making it an unsafe environment for children to live in.

Thankfully, there was another building on the site. With a grant, the orphanage renovated the building to include washrooms, a septic tank and electrical lines.

“The children were very happy with their new dormitory and also thank you for your contribution. We are very grateful for everything you are doing for Saint Dominique site,” writes Alphonse, general director of the Fondation Montesinos, a group that helps take care of Haiti’s orphans and is one of Chalice’s overseas partners.

On top of that, Chalice supporters are making the daily lives of site staff easier through the Chalice gift catalogue. The St. Dominique site now has a coffee maker, new computers, filing cabinets and a camera to take pictures of the beloved children at the site.

“We are and will always be grateful to your generosity for our children,” writes Wendell, site director.

Thank you, Chalice supporters!

Photo Friday: Our top 5 ‘Colourful Clothes’ photos!

Welcome to Photo Friday! Each Friday, we share photo collections of our favourite shots from our sponsor sites around the world.

An outfit is a form of self-expression, and at our sponsor sites in Haiti, many children and adults are rocking some colourful garb. Our top 5 ‘Colourful Clothes’ photos are a celebration of the beautiful cultures that influence style around the world.

#5: School Uniform Style

Who says school uniforms can’t be fashionable? The bright green uniforms of these girls at our St. Dominique site are beautiful and, dare we say, even trendy. When it comes to fashion, they’re in a class(room) of their own.

Kindness Goes a Long Way in Haiti

You never quite know where a dash of kindness will lead. Sometimes it means hope for someone struggling, an extra bit of income, or a new friend. For the students attending the Sant Ti moun Byenvini school near our Haiti North site, it meant full bellies and a whole lot of relief.

In early 2021, Haiti struggled with political upheaval and a contracting economy, all while still dealing with the devastating effects of COVID-19. The pandemic meant the country closed its borders, which cut off food supplies from the Dominican Republic and other international suppliers. Groceries became limited and expensive.

Parents even had trouble accessing materials for their small businesses, such as chicken feed. Very quickly, their only source of income was cut off.
