Photo Friday: Our top 5 ‘World Book Lovers’ Day’ photos

Welcome to Photo Friday! Each Friday, we share photo collections of our favourite shots from our sponsor sites around the world.

Having fun isn’t hard, when you’ve got a library card!

That’s right: tomorrow is World Book Lovers’ Day, and we’re here to celebrate with a special Photo Friday in its honour.

Teaching a child to love books is one of the best gifts you can give – and indeed, these photos from our sites in Ukraine demonstrate just that.

#5: Reading with Mom

Reading a story with Mom or Dad before bed is a beloved childhood memory for many, and every child around the world should have the experience. Just follow the example of this mom at our Pochaiv site. She even chooses books with bright colours, to keep it fun for her kids.

#4: Hitting the Books

18-year-old Yuliya might just set a record for how hard one woman can study. Part of the Chalice sponsorship program for 15 years, she’s now studying medicine and pharmacy at college near our Ternopil site. Generous Chalice donors contributed to a grant that ensures her tuition is covered for another year.

#3: Schoolbook Look

Schoolbooks: fun or not? These kids at our Pochaiv site seem to think they’re cool! If we wore smiles like that when reading a chunky textbook, the world would be a better place.

#2: A Bookish Gift

Marta and Khrystyna live with their mother, Olha, near our Pochaiv site. These adorable sisters received the gift of new school supplies through kind donations to our gift catalogue! Most schools in Ukraine are severely underfunded, so the burden to provide books and classroom supplies falls on parents. This is a large expense for struggling or low-income families, so the gift of school supplies makes an enormous difference

#1: Sibling Struggles

Be honest: if you had to help a sibling learn to read or do their schoolwork, you might make that face, too. It’s all worth it in the end, though, even if there are a few temper tantrums along the way…er, take our word for it.
