Abdi is a bright and cheerful 13-year-old boy with big dreams. He loves playing soccer at school and enjoys English and science. One day, he hopes to become a neurosurgeon so he can help others in hospital settings. Despite the hardship he has known, Abdi remains outgoing and full of hope.
He lives with his father and sibling in a vehicle parking room at his father’s workplace. The structure has no wall on one side, leaving the family exposed to cold nights. They share a single bed. His father works as a security guard, earning just enough to provide basic food and schooling. There is little left for anything more.
In May 2023, while riding a bicycle to school with his father, Abdi was involved in a serious road accident. Since then, his young life has been marked by repeated hospital visits and complex surgeries to repair severe internal injuries. He has undergone multiple procedures in an effort to reconstruct damage caused to his urinary tract.
Most recently, after a complex surgery, Abdi was discharged home, only to develop life-threatening complications days later. He was rushed back to the hospital and diagnosed with sepsis linked to a fecal fistula—a dangerous infection in his bloodstream. He now remains hospitalized, receiving strong intravenous antibiotics, daily wound care, and specialized treatment. Doctors expect he will require an extended hospital stay to allow his body to heal safely.
His father stays by his side as much as possible, traveling long distances and doing everything within his limited means. But the medical bills for this prolonged and critical care are overwhelming. Without support, continuing treatment will place unbearable strain on this already vulnerable family.
Abdi has endured pain no child should have to face. Yet he still dreams of returning to school, running on the soccer field again, and building a future where he can help save lives.
