After the Fire: Restoring Shelter and Dignity, Baraka, Kenya

Funding request: $10,416.38 CAD

Critical Need: CN-KBN0226

On the morning of January 5th, 2026, a devastating fire swept through a cluster of timber rental houses in Ragati Village near Mount Kenya Forest. Within a short time, seven homes were reduced to ashes. Among the affected families was 11-year-old Alex and his family.

Alex is a lively Grade 6 student who loves soccer and sings proudly in his church choir. He dreams like any other child his age. He lives with his parents and two older brothers in a close-knit family that survives on irregular casual labor. His parents work long days on nearby farms for very small daily wages, often managing only one main meal a day for the family.

When the fire broke out, all the adults had left to seek work. It is believed to have started from an unattended charcoal stove and spread rapidly through the wooden structures. By the time neighbors saw the smoke, it was too late.

Everything was lost—clothes, bedding, school uniforms, books, cooking utensils, and the little household items they had carefully gathered over years of sacrifice.

Now, five families, including Alex’s, are sheltering with neighbors. They have no privacy, no stable place to sleep, and no belongings to call their own. The children’s schooling has been disrupted, and daily life has become uncertain and humiliating. What was already a fragile existence has become a crisis.

These families are hardworking and resilient, but their resources were always limited. Rebuilding from nothing is beyond their capacity without outside support. Assistance will help provide food for the coming months, clothing, bedding, school supplies, and essential household items—restoring not just material needs, but dignity and hope.

For Alex and the other children, this support means returning to school with confidence and sleeping at night without fear or cold.

Thank you for taking the time to reflect on the suffering of these families. Your compassion and willingness to stand with those in crisis offer stability, comfort, and the first steps toward rebuilding their lives.
