Chalice gift gives Gracious new perspective

Gracious is an 11-year-old girl with a big heart and an even bigger spirit. With the support of her Chalice sponsor through the Kawambwa site in Zambia, she thrives at St. Mary’s School for the Visually Impaired. Gracious loves languages, arts, and social studies, reflecting her insatiable curiosity. She shines on the goalball court, showing her playful side and adaptability.

“Her dream is to become a teacher, a choice that reflects her thoughtful, kind-hearted nature and desire to support others,” says Sister Agnes, Kawambwa site director.

Gracious was born with a visual impairment but could still typically see the blackboard in class. Gradually, though, the teacher’s writing became fuzzier. Gracious felt frustrated when she couldn’t follow the lessons, and her eyes felt strained and tired.

Thanks to everyone who supported health and wellness through the gift catalogue, Gracious took part in the school’s medical checkup day. Her eye exam was, well, eye-opening. Her vision had deteriorated but could still be corrected by a simple pair of prescription glasses.

“The check-up brought not just clarity of vision,” says Sister Agnes, “but also emotional relief and reassurance, empowering her with the tools and knowledge to thrive more confidently in school and social life.”

“I didn’t know things could look different,” Gracious said when she learned she would receive glasses. “I can’t wait to read without guessing.” Sister Agnes says she then folded her hands and prayed a blessing.

“That single gift made her feel cherished,” says Sister Agnes.

“It made me feel like I mattered,” says Gracious. “That someone cared about how I’m growing. Because of Chalice… we got more than just checkups—we received knowledge, protection, and care.”

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
