World day of the Poor

This Sunday marks the ninth World Day of the Poor. This is a time when we are called to look beyond ourselves and see Christ in those who live in poverty. Pope Leo XIV announced this year’s theme to be “you are my hope,” and hope flourishes in every place where Chalice supporters reach.

In Kenya, a father named Laurence needed a hand after his wife passed away. Through our Chalice community, hope reached his family. Laurence spends his days roving through Nairobi’s streets in search of recycling to take to local factories.

Despite spending long hours working hard, his earnings are minimal and unpredictable. There are days he cannot afford food, and months he cannot make rent. But after his wife’s death, care for their three children lands squarely on his shoulders.

“Yet through it all, his unwavering love for his children and determination never falter,” says Eunice, a leader in our Nairobi site. Laurence lives with his two oldest children, Blessings and Dylan; the baby is currently living with his sister.

“The death of his wife has been a heavy burden of grief coupled by the pain of seeing the sorrow and sadness in his children’s eyes,” says Eunice. “They miss their mother and their young sister.” They did not have a proper place to sleep, and they were chronically food insecure.

A parent in the community knew Laurence and his struggles. They asked a social worker to visit his home and introduce themselves. The site staff could tell that Laurence needed support.

Thanks to generous Chalice supporters, the Nairobi site bought Laurence’s family a sturdy bunk bed, comfortable mattresses, and warm bedding, including duvets, bed sheets, and pillows. They also provided enough food to ensure the children have at least two meals a day.

“There were nights we went to bed hungry, lying on the cold floor, feeling tired and discouraged,” says Blessings. “Hunger made it hard to focus on school and even harder to hold on to our dreams.” Her father adds, “There were nights when my children went to sleep hungry, and I could see the sadness in their eyes. It broke my heart. I felt like I was failing them, unable to provide even the simplest comforts.”

“Your support arrived at just the right time, bringing food for their empty stomachs and a bed and beddings to keep them warm,” says Laurence.

“You have given us hope, dignity, and a reason to keep believing in a better tomorrow. It brings me peace to see my children with joy.”

“Thank you for standing with us,” says Blessings. “May God bless you always,”
