Rebuilding with hope

Eleuterio is 76 years old and lives with his wife, Nora, in a humble, rented home in Arica, Chile. It’s a busy household of nine people and three generations. Throughout his lifetime, he slowly built his life with intention, never imagining that soon he would start from scratch all over again.

The couple lives with two of their adult daughters, Jahayra and Kimberly, as well as their husbands and their combined three children – teen-aged Kevin and Steven, and little Bruce. Now five years old, Bruce is hoping to soon have a Chalice sponsor through our Arica site.

Eleuterio is a carpenter who likes to make furniture with his sons-in-law and grandson. One day, a massive fire broke out and destroyed their home and their workshop. They lost everything, including their tools.

“They were left on the street and started from scratch with sporadic jobs to survive,” says Veronica, Arica site director. There was no government support available to help them rebuild.

“Being a family of nine people, it has been very difficult,” Eleuterio says. “But God has shown me all his love and mercy through the generosity of Chalice sponsors, who helped us with work tools so we could continue working.”

The Arica site staff, thanks to everyone who supported tradespeople through our gift catalogue, arrived with a full delivery of carpentry tools to relaunch his workshop.

“Now, with my sons-in-law and my grandson, we are working hard to feed our family and, little by little, buy what we need to live,” Eleuterio says.

“Thanks to you, our dream has come true. Please accept all the gratitude of my family as well.”
