Madrine had her heart set on becoming a nurse one day. She studied diligently, and she had excellent academic performance, but her dream felt out of reach without the means to support her education.
Madrine grew up with her parents and two siblings in a town a little north of Nairobi, Kenya. Her parents, Purity and Simon, “worked tirelessly as casual laborers to support their children,” says Sister Jane, Starehe site director. “Despite their best efforts, the family struggled to meet basic needs, let alone provide for education.”
When she was 14, “Madrine’s life took a significant turn when she was sponsored by Chalice,” says Sister Jane. “This sponsorship provided Madrine with the stability and resources she needed to pursue her dreams.”
She worked hard throughout her years at Starehe Girls Centre, a boarding school that offers world-class education to young women from disadvantaged families. Madrine was determined to make the most of the opportunity her sponsor offered her.
Her dedication paid off. After Starehe, she enrolled in a major national university to pursue a degree in nursing. Now 24, Madrine is a reproductive health nurse in a hospital about thirty minutes from where she grew up.
“She provides compassionate care to countless individuals,” says Sister Jane. “Madrine’s profession is more than a job; it’s a mission fueled by gratitude and a desire to uplift others.”
She is deeply grateful to her sponsor for their unwavering support. “Their sponsorship didn’t just change her life; it empowered her to transform the lives of her family members, as she is now able to provide for them.”
And she didn’t stop there!
She looked beyond her family to the girls and young women in her community. As a way of giving back to them, she launched an online platform focused on educating girls about reproductive health.
“Through this initiative,” Sister Jane says, “she aims to equip young women with knowledge, foster open discussions, and promote healthier communities.”
