Around the world, children wake up excited and happy to go to school, eager to learn something new every day. But when teachers lack the materials that they need to teach, it creates a barrier to the children’s progress and potential. Providing items like textbooks and teaching aids through Chalice’s gift catalogue can make such a meaningful difference in the classroom.
The Sisters of the Child Jesus run the Chalice sponsorship program in multiple schools and children’s homes they serve in Zambia. After taking over leadership of a local orphanage, Kachema Musuma Children’s home, the Sisters launched a school for their children named Queen of Angels Academy.
The school runs from pre-primary to grade seven and has since expanded to serve students from the community as well as the orphanage.
They operate on a shoestring budget, and the cost of printing materials was a constant thorn in their sides. Unable to buy a printer or photocopier, they had to go into town to print the necessary materials, like tests. The shops in town charge “huge sums” for printing.
Thanks to everyone who supported teachers and students through our gift catalogue, the Queen of Angels staff welcomed a printer and photocopier.
The boon to their budget and convenience was immediate. “Furthermore, the school is assured of having enhanced learning due to the availability of printed resources, which positively impacts the educational experience,” says Sister Agnes, our Kawambwa site director.
