Najma’s full mouth restoration, Nairobi, Kenya

Najma is a jovial 3-year-old girl with a cheerful and friendly personality. She attends daycare, where she receives early education and basic skills such as feeding, personal care skills, and toilet training. Joining the daycare gave Najma’s single mother, Caroline, a chance to find work in a nearby recycling depot. She is grateful to have regular work six days a week and aspires to be a strong provider for her little girl.

Najma began experiencing teeth problems when she was about a year and a half old. Her milk teeth developed normally, but over time, her four front teeth began to break, causing significant pain and difficulty eating and sleeping. Caroline took her to the general hospital for treatment several times, and she was prescribed medication. The medication brought relief for a while, but the pain always returned. At such times, Najma refuses to eat, and her growth and development has been affected.

In April 2025, when the pain became unbearable, Caroline reached out to the Nairobi sponsor site with a request for support. With the help of the site, Najma was able to visit a dental clinic, where a thorough examination and an X-ray revealed severe dental caries and wear. The pediatric dentist diagnosed Najma with generalized mild to moderate gingivitis and severe early childhood caries.

Their recommended treatment plan is a full mouth restoration under general anesthesia (Najma is too young for chairside treatment), including pulpectomies, fillings, and resin restoration. Two of Najma’s severely damaged front teeth will be treated with tooth-colored pediatric crowns.

The total cost of the treatment is $4,570.98 CAD. This is more than Caroline would earn in two years at the recycling depot and is far beyond her means. The Nairobi site has therefore stepped in to cover Najma’s dental treatment as well as an oral hygiene kit and counselling for Caroline to help her support her daughter’s long-term dental health
