102 people will soon have safe place to live.
Every family deserves a safe and stable home, but many sponsored and non-sponsored families in our Madurai site’s communities are living in dangerous, temporary, and dilapidated shelters without proper toilet facilities. Facing many financial constraints, families are unable to build secure or hygienic homes.

In 2021, Chalice supported the Madurai team to carry out a successful construction project to build houses with toilets for 25 families who were most in need. Springing from this success, the site partnered with Chalice again in 2022-2023 to build 35 more houses.
But a lack of proper housing remains a significant issue, and there many more highly vulnerable families. These families are living in sub-par housing, or huts, which are endangering their children’s health and safety. The Madurai team has once again partnered with Chalice to build 24 more houses. They are committed to providing secure, dignified, and hygienic housing to promote each family’s long-term family stability and safety.
The new batch of families have been chosen by Chalice family circles, who know their members and neighbours well and are keenly aware of who is in genuine need of safe and adequate housing. Of their chosen families, 20 have a sponsored child, and 17 are headed by daily wage labourers – mainly agricultural – alongside those working in fishing, security, private homes, or shops. Their average income is the equivalent of $2.80 per day. Among all 24 sponsored families, there are 102 individuals, 58 of whom are children.
Each two-roomed brick house will be 17×11 feet with a separate 7×5 foot latrine facility. They will be wired with electricity and fitted with lights and ceiling fans. The total budget is $189,797.68 CAD, which includes all materials and labour. The staff will also run educational sessions with the families, emphasizing the importance of maintaining hygiene in their homes and properties.
Constructing houses for these 24 families will provide them with a safe, stable living environment, addressing their urgent need for secure and dignified housing.
