Knit was a hit!

Learning how to knit is not only a peaceful hobby but also a valuable and empowering skill. In May 2024, our Baraka site team opened a tailoring training centre for the women of the Juakali community in Kenya. The Baraka team can see that the new centre is not only providing skills, “but also boosted their confidence and created a potential source of income for their families,” says Fr. Varghese.

With support from those who donated to Chalice’s gift catalogue, 25 women began the inaugural knitting and tailoring course. Throughout the program, the women have training on various techniques, including knitting sweaters, developing patterns, and making vibrant caps and woolen bags. Their skills in the art of crocheting are continuously growing.

The learners are “producing beautiful handcrafted items that reflect their dedication and creativity,” says Fr. Varghese, Baraka site director.

“Many participants are now prepared to use these skills to start small businesses, collaborate with local markets, and create a sustainable livelihood for themselves,” he says, “the success of the tailoring centre is a testament to what can be achieved when we work together to uplift communities and provide opportunities for growth and self-sufficiency.”

The first cohort completed their course in October, 2024. “Their journey from inexperienced learners to skilled artisans has been remarkable,” he says, “and we have witnessed a significant improvement in their craftsmanship and entrepreneurial mindset. Many of the women have already started producing items for sale, and we anticipate that their efforts will have a lasting positive impact on the community.”

It gained a lot of interest, other women in the village have taken notice, and many have approached the Baraka team to express their curiosity in the next iterations of the course, which began a month after the first finished.

Fr. Varghese, Baraka site director says, “we extend our deepest gratitude to Chalice for your unwavering support and belief in the potential of the women in Juakali Area. Without your generous financial contribution, this project would not have been possible. Your support has gone beyond monetary value, it has been a source of hope, encouragement, and empowerment. Your support has been instrumental in empowering the women of this community, providing them with invaluable skills that will benefit them for a lifetime.”

By supporting the gift catalogue, you help provide new opportunities. You can bring lasting change to families and communities. A small gift can make a big difference.
