Jedidah’s gallbladder diagnosis and surgery

Jedidah is a single mother of two who provides for her family as a casual labourer. Her nine-year-old son Elvis was born with cerebral palsy, and she sometimes struggles to afford his hygiene and continence produces. Elvis has been blessed by a Chalice sponsor through the Baraka site since he was three.

In late January 2025, Jedidah (46) started having intense abdominal pain. A few days later, she started taking medication and went for an endoscopy at the local hospital. The scope showed she had an inflamed stomach lining, indicating gastritis. They treated her and sent her home, but her pain did not abate.

She returned to the hospital, where they ran liver and kidney function tests and urine tests. They began medical treatment, redid the endoscopy, and did an ultrasound. It confirmed an inflamed gallbladder and gallstones. The doctor recommended immediate surgery; a laparoscopic cholecystectomy to remove her diseased gallbladder.

Jedidah underwent the procedure and concluded her emergency treatment. But her diagnosis and surgery came with many out-of-pocket expenses that amounted to $7,852.55 CAD. These charges include her consultations, inpatient visits, endoscopies, lab tests, operation, nursing and surgeon’s fees, post-op care and medicine, administration charges, hospital stay, pharmacy, and post-operative doctors’ visits.

The Baraka site staff are requesting to support Jedidah to pay the hospital bill she now faces after her emergency care. Going forward, they will support her as she heals and resumes her daily activities, ensuring that Elvis continues to receive the care he needs.
