Every drop counts on World Water Day. While many of us can walk to the kitchen and turn on a tap, families at our sponsor sites travel long distances in search of water for household use. Thanks to Chalice’s generous donors, communities around the world are gaining access to clean, safe water.
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel school is in a region of our Mikinduri sponsor site in Kenya. This is a water-scarce area, and residents have noticed increasingly unpredictable rainfall patterns.
Water is essential. Residents need it in their homes, for their livestock, and for their farms. When Chalice and the Mikinduri site partnered to drill a borehole well at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, they knew it would be a boost to both the school and the neighbouring communities.
The borehole was drilled and they set up steel water tank stands with a 10,000 m3 water tank. Water tap stations were also set up around the campus.
“It is with a lot of joy and gratitude” that Carolyne affirms that the borehole project is complete.
“This project will also expand the already existing kitchen garden, where the production will be greater. The surplus will be sold to the surrounding community. Then they can use the money to carry out developmental projects in the schools.”
“The community is enjoying the water access,” Carolyne says.
Beyond the school gates, women and children will reduce the time they spend walking long distances in search of water. This frees them to get involved in other productive activities.
The borehole will also help them start a kitchen vegetable garden. Soon, families will have more balanced diets, improving their health and nutritional status.
“We are grateful to the Chalice community,” Carolyne says, “for giving our school pupils and surrounding communities easy access to a basic need and giving them a new lease of life.”
As we celebrate World Water Day, it’s a powerful reminder of how essential clean water is to every life. Let’s continue to recognize the value of this precious resource and the progress we’ve made in bringing it to those who need it most.
When you give to our clean water fund, you help build lasting solutions like wells, toilets, pumps, and handwashing stations. Join us this World Water Day in creating lasting change with clean water for all!
