Nayana's meningoencephalitis diagnosis and treatment, Kerala, India

Nayana is a talented grade ten student who lives in a school hostel while she studies. Back home, her family is composed of her parents, Ramya and Unni, her Chalice sponsored sister Neeraj, and her maternal grandparents. Her parents are daily wage earners struggling to make ends meet. Despite their financial hardships, the couple is determined to provide quality education for their two talented children.

In October 2024, Nayana was in the hostel when she developed a fever and was sent home to her parents for treatment. Despite taking medication, her fever persisted, and she began experiencing fatigue and weakness. After almost two weeks, she fainted.

She was rushed to the hospital, where doctors recommended transferring her to a specialized facility for better care. Nayana was admitted to a second hospital, where she was diagnosed with meningoencephalitis, a condition caused by a viral, bacterial, or parasitic infection that affects the brain. Her speech and movement were unusual and involuntary. She was critically ill and needed intensive care for a week.

Undergoing a series of tests, including MRI, CT scans, blood tests, urine tests, ultrasound, and ECG, she gradually showed signs of improvement.

She was discharged after 11 days with strict instructions to stay home from school for a month and to prioritize nutritious food and rest. She must attend regular check-ups and counseling at a nearby hospital for two months. Currently, Nayana is recovering at home and feeling better.

But her emergency has placed her parents into a financial crisis. They have exhausted their savings on her treatment and still face $2,212.10 CAD in hospital bills. The Kerala sponsor site has therefore requested to cover her bills, which include Nayana’s hospitalization, consultations, ECG, MRI, rehabilitation, and medicine.
