14-year-old in ICU with severe trauma.
Funding Request :$14,439.70 CAD
Critical Need: CNUTK0125
Daryna is 14 years old and studying in grade nine in her village school. She is a strong student and loves to sing, especially in her church choir. She also has a knack for cooking and baking. Daryna lives with her parents and her sister Olena, who has been sponsored though Chalice’s Ternopil site since 2020. Both of her parents have inconsistent employment since her father lost his job when the war started.
Just before Christmas 2024 Daryna was hit by a skidding car while she was standing at the side of the road. She was hospitalized with severe injuries. She had severe craniocerebral trauma, contusions on both lungs, liver and kidneys, and fractured ribs and pelvic bone.
She underwent brain surgery and treatment to stabilize her vital functions. Daryna has been in a coma in the ICU in the children’s hospital for three weeks. At the time of writing, Daryna is responding to some stimuli, but she has not regained consciousness. The doctors say Daryna has a chance at recovery, but they estimate it will be months of time and care.
When she regains consciousness, she will need at least one month of intensive rehabilitation. Her doctors are urging her parents to send her to a well-respected facility in Lviv.
But the centre charges about $335 CAD per day for inpatient care. This cost, Ternopil site staff know, is ‘completely unaffordable’ for Daryna’s parents. The community of sponsored families and other well-wishers in her village raised funds, but it would only cover a day or so in the facility.
The Ternopil site staff have therefore requested $14,439.70 CAD to cover Daryna’s one-month intensive rehabilitation at the Lviv centre.
