 Jesi Flora’s surgery, Tamil, India

Jesi Flora is a mother of four, living with her family in a city in southern India. Their daughter Mary is pursuing her second year of a Master of Science with the support of her Chalice sponsor through our Tamil site. Jesi Flora is a homemaker and her husband, Jeyaseelan, works as an agricultural daily wage labourer.

Jesi Flora, 47, had been experiencing stomach pain for the past year and had tried managing it with medication. But her pain worsened, and then she had unusual, heavy bleeding. She went to the hospital, where a scan showed uterine cysts. Her doctor told her she needed surgery; knowing she couldn’t afford the quoted price of the operation, Jesi Flora asked to be discharged.

Ten days later, she was in a second hospital for more tests and scans. The tests revealed that her blood levels were dangerously low, and she received six units of blood transfusion. After a week, she underwent surgery.

She was discharged and went home to recover, returning as scheduled to have her stitches removed. She also needed antibiotics to care for an infection at the wound site.

Her hospitalizations, tests, transfusions, and emergency surgery have incurred bills of $1,773.40 CAD. Knowing this is far beyond Jesi Flora and Jeyaseelan’s means, the Tamil site has requested to cover these bills.
