Daryna’s dental work, Ternopil, Ukraine

Daryna is a shy 11-year-old who likes to draw and make bracelets. She has a heart for animals and wants to become a veterinarian. She lives with her parents and two older sisters a few kilometres outside of the nearest district centre, where our Ternopil site office is. The family keeps chicken for food. She enjoys having a Chalice sponsor.

Five years ago, when Daryna was 6, her baby teeth began to bother her. She was in pain and had four teeth treated, but she found the experience frightening. When the symptoms returned after a year, she refused to see the dentist, and had to make do with mouth wash. Her parents hoped that the situation would resolve on its own when her baby teeth fell out and her adult teeth grew in.

However, in the intervening three years, none of Daryna’s ten baby teeth have fallen out, but six adult teeth have grown in. There is not enough space in her mouth for both sets of teeth. Her bite is impacted and it’s uncomfortable for her to chew.

She needs substantial dental work: extraction of six teeth, fillings for caries on six teeth, periodontitis treatment, two dental crowns, and braces. This comes as a private cost for her parents, Tetyana and Vasyl, at a budgeted $2,213.32 CAD.

Tetyana has a job as a cleaner at a gas station and Vasyl has a temporary job as a handyman. Daryna’s treatment represents more than five months of their combined incomes. The Ternopil site has therefore requested to cover her dental treatment.
