Funding Request: $2,776.62 CAD
Critical Need: CN-HHJ1124B
Kervens is 13 years old and lives with his mother, grandmother, and several siblings and cousins in a countryside community in southern Haiti. His mother, Marie, does not have formal employment – she earns what she can from a small farm. In the country’s cost-of-living crisis, her farm’s output cannot keep up with daily expenses.
Kervens went for a medical check-up through Chalice’s annual health check program. He told the doctor he had pain around his lower right abdomen. The doctor recognized that Kervens needed to see a urologist and surgeon to correct the issues. He issued him a referral for further testing and specialist consultations.
After an ultrasound and lab work, the specialists confirmed that Kervens needs surgery. He will also need to eat a diet rich in iron and protein. The surgery will have to take place in a hospital about two hours from their home.
At Kervens’s first Chalice check-up, Marie was already bracing for the possibility of several medical expenses. She knew she would have unmanageable bills for Kervens’s hospitalization, transportation to another city, specialist appointments, and follow-up care.
The Haiti South site team, knowing this was emotionally and financially daunting, stepped in to ensure that Kervens’s treatment is not delayed because of a lack of financial resources.
They have therefore requested a budget of $2,776.62 CAD to cover Kervens’s medications, specialists (urologist, surgeon), lab tests, operation, round-trip transportation, and a month’s worth of nutrition support and vitamins.
