Christmas brings an oasis of Christ’s peace in Haiti

The children in Chalice’s Haiti sponsor sites needed an extra sprinkle of Christmas magic this year.

A crisis of fear, food insecurity, and instability have permeated every home. Br. Marcelin, our Haiti South site director, heard parents talking about last Christmas. What they all remembered: “Folks didn’t eat.”

Unprecedented times call for an unprecedented party. Treats, music and decorations are important, but this had to be a total–if temporary–oasis from the hardship.

Thanks to everyone who generously supported Chalice’s Christmas fund, staff got to work on their Christmas wonderland: casting performers, decorating, calling guest speakers, arranging gifts, and inviting the whole community – children, families, school staff, everyone!

Their plant worked. “Christmastime helps them leave behind all their worries,” Br. Marcelin says. “It is the best moment for them to join together as families and friends to celebrate.”

Before, people may have gone hungry, but on this day “everybody eats and drinks,” says Br. Marcelin. “In fact, they are looking forward to the next Christmas celebrations.”

“Words cannot describe how thankful we are toward Chalice.”
