Sandra's medical tests and rheumatoid arthritis treatment, Amanecer, Bolivia

Sandra is a resilient single mother of four. Her three school-aged boys are sponsored through Chalice’s Amanecer site in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Sandra, 50, has lived with debilitating arthritic pain for six years. Her health prevents her from finding work that meets the country’s minimum wage requirements. When she can, she does some cleaning and recycling jobs.

Her arthritis began in her hands, feet, knees, and other joints. She went to a doctor on the recommendation of her neighbours, but could not afford a rheumatologist. As a result, years of treatment did not stop the progressive toll on her body and mobility.

It reached the point that Sandra’s joints were so inflamed, she could not walk or stand. She turned to her Chalice family circle for advice and support. A team from our Amanecer site went to visit her home and could see that she urgently needed specialist care. They contacted a rheumatologist, and he took Sandra on as his patient.

The doctor explained to Sandra that she has an autoimmune disorder that can spread beyond her joints; in some patients, the disease affects the skin, eyes, lungs, heart, or blood vessels. While there is no cure, treatment can stop or slow the spread and reduce her pain.

The Amanecer site team has requested $3,203.35 CAD to support Sandra through the proper treatment she has long needed. She will receive monthly outpatient treatment, regular required X-rays, and prescription medicine.
