Funding Request: $2,579.50 CAD
Critical Need: CNKNK0924
Lawrence, aged 82, is a loving father and grandfather. He cares for two of his grandchildren, Andrew and Yawaniter, who are sponsored by Chalice through our Nairobi site. He is currently living in a village outside of the capital after many years of working as a casual laborer on construction sites and commercial businesses.
Lawrence started feeling chest pain in December 2023. This began a two-month series of appointments and hospital visits until he was admitted at a national hospital in February 2024. After four days, they asked him to attend weekly appointments at their heart clinic. On the day of his first appointment, he had to go to the ER for what seemed like a cardiac episode.
For a month, Lawrence kept well at home, following his doctor’s medication and advice. But another emergency prompted another admission. After four days in hospital, his kidneys failed. He underwent several dialysis sessions; after seven days his kidneys gradually improved. After a few more weeks, he had minor surgery, and then was ready for discharge.
But when he was at last stable enough to go home, his family did not have the funds available to settle his accumulated hospital bill. Lawrence was stuck until they found a solution. Friends, neighbours, and family members all pitched in to help, and they tried to hold some fundraisers. But there was still a significant deficit. He eventually went home, using his family’s land title as collateral.
The Nairobi site team has put forward a request for the $2,579.50 CAD in hospital bills his family was not able to fundraise yet.
Your support will offer Lawrence and his family a renewed sense of hope for a complete recovery and a long and brighter life ahead.
